Don’t ever take your garage door for granted. It is your first line of defense against intruders, trespassers and thieves. Your garage door has many moving parts and assuming that you have spent a lot of money in installing it, you need to care for it so it won’t break down in just a couple of years. You need to know the common garage door parts that you need to take care of in order for your garage door to last for years. In this regard, you need to know the usual garage door parts that need to be replaced so that you’ll be able to inspect them regularly to see if they’re still in good working condition. Following is a list of these garage door parts.
- Chains and cables
Chains and cables are the most used parts of a garage door. They are also exposed to the elements. Although they are usually made of strong steel, they can develop rusts which can compromise their structures and strength. Just like any chain, these cables are only as strong as its weakest link. Therefore, you need to check the cables and see if there are any rusts developing in any of their links. There are also cables that are made of “wire rope” meaning they are made of individual wire strands which are ‘stringed’ together just like an ordinary rope. If they are not cared for regularly, rusts will fray these wire strands and make the cable weak.
- Hinges and related hardware
Garage doors are attached or bolted into the structure’s frame by hinges and related hardware. You need to regularly check if these hinges and hardware are always in good condition. The elements also work against these garage door parts and make them weak through the development of rusts and metal breakage. These hinges and hardware are also subjected to a lot of stress because of the daily use of the garage door. If they are already weak, you have an accident waiting to happen. You will prevent an accident from happening if you will keep the hinges and related hardware of your garage door always in good condition and to replace them if they are already worn out.
Garage door rollers are parts of garage doors that are most commonly replaced. You need to check them at least twice a year. The common practice is to have them replaced after seven years of operation. Regardless of the number of years, if you find that there’s a chip, crack or some parts of the roller is already worn out, you need to have it replaced. You also need to check the ease or difficulty by which they can roll back and forth on the trackers. This will tell you if you need to lubricate their bearings so that they will have more ‘free-play.’
Garage door springs are also one of the most common garage door parts that are subjected to stress. You can expect that after some time, they will show metal fatigue. You should at least have them checked regularly to see if they are still in good working condition. The usual lifetime of garage door springs is around one year. Therefore, think of replacing them after one year or thereabouts. Don’t wait for them to break down before replacing them because you might suffer the consequences.
Garage doors need to be sealed so that moisture can’t penetrate the garage. This is done by installing weatherstripping at the bottom of the garage door. Weatherstripping will prevent moisture or water from rains or floodwater from entering the garage. Since the weatherstrip is very close to the ground, it is also exposed to the elements. Check it regularly and once you see that some sections of it are already damaged, have it replaced at once.
- Moving parts
A garage door is made up of many parts. Whatever is not listed in the above, but are parts of the garage door that always move when the garage door is used, you need to check them regularly if they are still working as they should. The rule of thumb is that any moving part of a garage door should be oiled regularly. This is to reduce the amount of friction that they are subjected to every time the garage door is used. Check these parts for rusts, cracks, chips or any signs of breakage, and replace the ones that are already damaged.
